SALAZAR ACTS IN AFRICA Opposition to the Salazar regime in the Portuguese African territories is being dealt with as firmly as it in Portugal itself. The Portuguese announced last week the arrest of 42 leaders of an alleged plot against the Government (writers a Correspondent), but the Government has so far has so far said nothing about the arrest of Opposition leaders in Mozambique or Angola, Portugal’s two African possessions. It is known that five supporters of General Delgado, the leader of Portuguese opposition to Dr. Salazar, were recently arrested in Lourenço Marques, the capital of Mozambique. The leader of this group, a 30-year-old economist and journalist, Antonio Figueiredo, was put on board a ship for Lisbon last Sunday. The Government Gazette published an announcement that he was being banished. Several Portuguese Angolan leaders are known to have escaped before they could be arrested. They have sought refuge in Germany. The main opposition in the African territories has come not from Africans but from Portuguese liberals. THE OBSERVER May 10th, 1959.
