NEWS AMSAC Press Release of the American Society of African Culture 15 East 40th Street New York 16, New York For release Wednesday, March 25, 1959 For further information call: Miss Courtney - OR 9 9255 “The Unity and Responsibility of Negro African Culture” is the theme at the Second Congress of Negro Writers and Artists which begins today its S-day meeting in Rome, Italy. This conference is sponsored by the international Society of African Culture, an organization which is known in this country as the publisher of the Journal, PRÉSENCE AFRICAINE. Representing the United States will be 13 leaders and members of the American Society of African Culture (AMSAC). Chairman of the delegation is Dr. John A. Davis; Executive Director of AMSAC, Commissioner of the N.Y. State Commission Against Discrimination, and Professor of Government at the City College of New York. The delegation includes: Mr. Samuel W. Allen; poet and instructor at the School of law, Texas Southern University. Dr. Horace Mann Bond; President of AMSAC, Dean of the School of Education, Atlanta University. Mr. Robert L. Carter, General Counsel for the NAACP. Dr. Mercer Cook; Chairman of the AMSAC Executive Council, Professor of French, Howard University currently on leave in Europe. Mr. Elton Fax, artist, New York. Dr. William T. Fontaine, Secretary of AMSAC, Professor of Philosophy, University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Naomi Garret; Professor of Romance Languages, West Virginia State College currently on leave in Europe. Mr. James T. Harris; Jr.; Assistant Executive Director of AMSAC. Dr. Aceleide Cromwell Hill; sociologist, African Research and Studies Program of Boston University. Mr. James W. Ivy; Treasurer of AMSAC, Editor of the Crisis magazine. Miss Pearl Primus; dancer, anthropologist; New York. Mr. Saunders Redding; writer, Hampton Institute. Five members of the American delegation will present papers during the Congress: Mr. Saunders Redding on “Sanctions of the American Negro’s Literary Art”; Dr.William T. Fontaine on “Toward a Philosophy of America Negro Literature”; Mr. Elton Fax on “Thunderbolts in colour and Stone”; Mr. James W. Ivy on “The Semantics of Being Negro in the Americas” and Mr. Robert L. Carter on “The United States Supreme Court and the Issue of Racial Discrimination since 1940”. The Congress is organized around four major commissions: Literature, The Human and Political Sciences, The Arts and the Mathematical and Technical Sciences. During the Congress there will be a display of Negro literature and art. AMSAC is contributing pictures to this display and recordings of some of the top Negro musicians of the country in addition to a collection of books by American Negro authors.
